SigEp Dominates 2015 GLOS Awards

Hanover, NH (5/20/2015) - SigEp NH Alpha had a tremendous night at the Dartmouth Greek Life Awards celebration at the Roth Center on 5/20/2015. The chapter received the O'Connor Prize,awarded to the best fraternity as evaluated in nine categories including scholarship, member development, new member program, chapter management, chapter advisory program, alumni relations, risk management, community relations, and community service.This was the fourth year in a row that NH Alpha won this award. 

The chapter also received the Service Award for the highest amount of community service hours, and the Leadership Program Award for co-hosting the Experiential Learning University in the chapter house. Receiving individual awardswere Arts "All Star" Max Gottschall '15, Scholarship "All Star" Colin Walmsley '15, and Greek Man of the Year Eli Derrow '15.

Arts All-Star Maxx Gottschall '15, a double major in Theater and Government, is a director, actor, and composer. Whether it be for a new arrangement for a cappella, an original classical piece, or a transcription of a musical theater score, this all-star devotes his time to the arts. This brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity served as the Aires musical director and was instrumental in arranging a multitude of songs for the Aires album that was recently nominated for Best Male Collegiate Album by the Contemporary A Cappella Society. He has been a cast member in HOP productions: Hairspray, Angels in America, and Spring Awakening. For his senior thesis in the Theater department he served as both the director and the musical director for Stephen Sondheim's musical Merrily We Roll Along. Every aspect of the production was completely student-run and this all-star had the responsibility of casting all actors, teaching the music to both the band and actors, directing all scenes, and coordinating the theater department personnel and stage management.

Eli and Colin make it two years that SigEps have won the Greek Man of the Year and Academic All-Star Awards, respectively. Last year brothers Elliot Sanborn '14 and Joseph Singh '14 took home those honors.

NH Alpha Dominates at Dartmouth Greek Life Awards

5/12/2014, Hanover, NH – The New Hampshire Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity took home numerous organization and individual awards at the Dartmouth Greek Letter Organizations and Societies’ (GLOS) annual awards ceremony last night.

For the third year in a row, SigEp won the O’Connor Cup and the Scholarship Cup. The O’Connor Cup, Dartmouth’s highest Greek honor, is presented annually to the chapter that have been the most outstanding in the principles of scholarship, leadership, service, being inclusive, brotherhood/sisterhood, and accountability.  The award is named after the late Proctor John O'Connor who served Dartmouth College for eleven years. The Scholarship Cup is presented to the fraternity with the highest cumulative GPA for the Academic Year. SigEp’s GPA for the year was 3.592, highest of the 15 fraternities, and more than a tenth of a point above the all campus average.

In addition to the Chapter awards, SigEp was well-represented in individual awards.

Elliot Sanborn ’14 was named the Greek Man of the Year. Elliot served as the Chairman of the Greek Leadership Council (GLC) Executive Board. He worked to create and administer the first-year harm reduction policy meeting individually with all the first-years caught breaking the policy and crafting their personal plans to get their recruitment eligibility restored.  Elliot was involved with the Student and President committee on Sexual Assault. He crafted the Dartmouth Code of Standards policy to improve respect and inclusion within the community, and helped amend the GLC constitution adding two new positions of accountability chair and vice chair.  He drove a campus-wide program to provide the Dartmouth Bystander Initiative (DBI) training to all students and making it a requirement for recruitment.  And he guided the process to create a Greek judicial board modeled after SigEp’s Standards Board.  Elliott is a member of Order of Omega (Greek leadership society) and Gamma Sigma Alpha (Greek academic honor society).  The Greek Man of the Year Award recognizes Elliot for his dedication to improving Greek Life at Dartmouth College.

Joseph Singh ’14 received the Academic All-Star Award. A Government major, Public Policy minor, Joseph is an inductee of Phi Beta Kappa and a Rhodes Scholar. He participated in the Government FSP to the London School of Economics after which he was awarded the 2012 Angulo World Experience Award for best academic performance on a Dartmouth FSP. At Dartmouth, he served as the Head Writing Assistant at RWIT and as a Rockefeller Leadership Fellow. He interned at the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, Center for a New American Security, Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, and Policy Directions Inc. Additionally, he is a Presidential Fellow at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, Analyst in the Policy Research Shop at Rocky, a member of the Global Policy Practicum on Economic Development in India, and was a previous James O. Freedman Presidential Scholar in the Government department. He has won the Dutton Woods and Foster Burnap scholarships for academic excellence, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy Grant, Dickey Center for International Understanding Class of 1966 Fellowship, and was a winner in Foreign Affairs magazine's 2012 Student Essay Competition.

The National Greek Honor society, Gamma Sigma Alpha, also recognized graduating seniors with a 3.5 GPA. Receiving a graduation cord to be proudly worn at commencement were SigEps Elliot Sanborn and John Hong.

The National Order of Omega Leadership Honor Society prides itself on selecting the top 5% of Greek students on campus who excel in leadership, scholarship, service and character. SigEps receiving this honor were Connor Watumull, Elliot Sanborn, and Michael Berger.

SigEp brother and incoming Greek Leadership Council Moderator Alistair Glover ’14 closed the GLOS Awards ceremony congratulating all the winners and encouraging continued improvement.

2015 SigEp Annual Fund

 

 

This will be the third year of the SigEp Annual Fund.  Many thanks to all of you who donated last year!  When a SigEp brother calls this year, pick up the phone, listen to him and please make a donation to the Annual Fund. 

 

As we did last year, we’ll be keeping track of donation participation by decade.  Help your decade top the participation list and have bragging rights for the year!  Last year, the 70's just barely edged out the 80’s with a participation rate of 12.56%.

 

Our Annual Fund goals this year are $15,000 in donations and 15% participation.  We now have two ways to donate to the Annual Fund:

 

• Unrestricted donations:  These can be used for the purchase of furnishings for specific rooms at the Chapter House, maintenance of infrastructure items (structure, electrical, electronic, plumbing), support for Alumni reunion events, operating expenditures, etc.  Unrestricted donations are non-tax deductible.

• For unrestricted donations, use PayPal
